The ADO Bus, a Private Transfer, the Tren Maya and the Taxi Line: What Each One Actually Costs in 2026

Let's start with the part most guides leave out: there is no good spontaneous way out of Cancún Airport. Rideshare apps cannot pick you up inside the terminals, the taxi desks set their own rates with no meter and no ceiling, and the people who approach you first in the arrivals hall are usually selling timeshare tours, not transport.
None of that makes the trip hard. It makes it a trip you decide before you fly, not after you land. Playa del Carmen sits about 55 kilometres south of the airport, roughly 50 to 70 minutes down Highway 307, and there are four real ways to cover it. Here is what each one costs, how long it takes, and who it actually suits.
The Four Options, Side by Side
ADO bus — about MXN 270 (USD 17) per person, 1h 30m to 1h 50m. Best for solo travellers and couples with light luggage.
Private transfer — about USD 65 to 85 for the whole vehicle, 50 to 70 minutes. Best for families, groups, late arrivals and anyone with a lot of bags.
Tren Maya — from MXN 148, plus MXN 55 for the shuttle to the station, 49 minutes on the train. Only works for morning arrivals.
Airport taxi — about USD 80 to 110 for the vehicle, 50 to 70 minutes. Best for almost nobody, and we explain why below.

1. The ADO Bus: Cheapest, and Genuinely Fine
ADO runs direct buses from the airport to Playa del Carmen's Terminal Turística, right at the edge of Fifth Avenue. Tickets run around MXN 270 one way, roughly USD 17, and the ride takes an hour and a half to an hour and fifty, partly because the bus calls at the airport terminals in sequence before heading south.
These are not chicken buses. Air conditioning, assigned seats, luggage hold underneath, usually a film playing. You will find the ADO counter past customs in each terminal, next to the taxi booths.
Two things that catch people out
Tickets are tied to a specific departure, not open. If your flight lands late, the ticket you bought online may be worthless and you will pay again for the next bus. Buy at the counter once you are through customs unless your arrival time is solid.
The bus drops you downtown, not at your door. If your rental is in Playacar, Coco Beach or anywhere north of Constituyentes, add a taxi from the terminal — which quietly erases part of the savings if you are two or more people.

2. Private Transfer: What Most of Our Guests Book
A pre-booked private transfer runs about USD 65 to 85 for the whole vehicle, door to door, in 50 to 70 minutes. For one person it is expensive. For a family of four it is often cheaper than four bus tickets plus a taxi at the other end, and it removes every decision from the day you arrive.
The part that matters more than the price: a real transfer company tracks your flight. If you sit on the tarmac for an hour, the driver is still there. That is the difference between a service and a car.
How to book one without getting burned
Book 24 to 48 hours ahead and give them your flight number. No flight number means no flight tracking.
Confirm the price is for the vehicle, not per person, and that it includes tolls and taxes.
Ask where the driver waits. Legitimate services meet you outside the terminal, past the car rental desks — not at the curb where the touts work.
Round trips usually save around 10 percent, but only book the return if your departure time is fixed.
3. The Tren Maya: Back, But Read the Timetable First
The Cancún–Playa del Carmen stretch of the Tren Maya reopened on 15 August 2026 after months of works, and the ride itself is excellent: 49 minutes, air conditioned, no traffic on the 307. Fares in tourist class start at MXN 148 for domestic travellers, with reduced rates for Quintana Roo residents and students.
Now the catch, and it is a big one. There are only two departures a day toward Playa del Carmen: 06:45 and 10:30. Coming back, 07:47 and 12:00. If your flight lands at two in the afternoon — which is when most international flights land — the train is not an option that day.
There is a second wrinkle. You do not walk from your gate onto the platform. The new Tren Maya Conecta shuttle service links the station with the airport terminals for MXN 55, so you need to budget that transfer and the waiting time on both ends.
Our honest read: the Tren Maya is a great way to do a day trip to Cancún or Tulum once you are here. As an airport transfer, it works for exactly one scenario — an early morning arrival with time to spare and no rush to get to the beach.
4. The Airport Taxi Line: The One to Avoid
Taxis at Cancún Airport operate under a concession with fixed booth rates rather than meters, and Playa del Carmen typically runs USD 80 to 110, sometimes more at the counter. That is the most expensive per-kilometre transport most visitors will buy anywhere in Mexico, in an older sedan, with no flight tracking.
Locals do not do this. They pre-book. The only reason to join that line is an unplanned arrival with no booking, and even then you are paying a premium for not having decided sooner.
And what about Uber?
The app exists in the region, but rideshare drivers are not permitted to pick up inside the airport's federal zone. In 2026 what often arrives when you request a car at CUN is a taxi wearing an Uber badge, at taxi prices. Some travellers do walk out past the airport perimeter to meet a driver; it works, but with luggage, after a long flight, it is a strange way to save money. Uber and DiDi become genuinely useful once you are in town.

What About Renting a Car?
Worth it if you plan on day trips to cenotes, ruins and Cozumel. Not worth it if you are staying in Playa itself, where the centre is walkable and parking is a genuine headache.
Two things to know before you book the cheap online rate. Mexican third-party liability insurance is mandatory and is almost never included in that headline price, so the counter total can come in at several times what you were quoted. And most agencies place a hold of several hundred dollars on your credit card, which is not the same as a charge but does tie up your limit for the trip.

Arriving After Dark
Highway 307 is a well-lit four-lane road and the drive is unremarkable at night. The variable is not the highway, it is the last five minutes. Some condo entrances in Playa are hard to find in the dark, gated communities need a name on a list, and not every building has someone at the door at midnight.
So if you land late: pre-book the transfer, send your host the flight number, and confirm how you get through the door before you are standing outside it. That single message is the difference between a smooth arrival and an hour on the phone.
The Short Answer
One or two people, light bags, daytime arrival: the ADO bus, bought at the terminal counter.
A family or group of three or more: a private transfer, booked with your flight number.
Landing before 9 a.m. with no rush: the Tren Maya, plus the Conecta shuttle.
Landing after dark: a private transfer, and message your host before you take off.
Staying a month or longer: a private transfer on arrival, then Uber and colectivos once you are in town.
