Sargassum season is here

With forecasts pointing to one of the heaviest sargassum seasons on record, up to 60,000 tons expected this year, double last year’s figures, authorities in Playa del Carmen are ramping up their response.

The Mexican Navy (SEMAR) and the Federal Maritime Land Zone (Zofemat) have launched Operación Sargazo 2026, deploying nine maritime units to carry out continuous cleanup along the coast. Crews have been working since early morning alongside municipal authorities to keep beaches clear for locals and visitors alike.

A key part of the strategy is an anti-sargassum barrier system that will eventually cover up to five kilometers of coastline, from Playa Fundadores to Punta Esmeralda. The goal is to stop the seaweed before it reaches the sand. Several hotels have also started installing their own containment systems.

Authorities are calling on all sectors to work together, noting that protecting the Riviera Maya’s coastline requires a coordinated effort between government, the private sector, and the local community.
